The Creative Writing Master of Fine Arts at Full Sail University
The Creative Writing master of fine arts at Full Sail University is all about developing the skills and creative mindset you need to pursue a professional writing career in the entertainment and media industries, as well as non-entertainment career options. Program Director Noelani Cornell says, "As you progress through the program, you will learn how to create compelling stories and characters while developing multimedia writing skills that are applicable to a wide array of careers."
At the beginning of the MFA program, students will learn how to get the most out of their degree by establishing a solid foundation for advanced coursework. The Mastery portion of the program includes learning how to conduct research at a high level and how to demonstrate mastery of a subject. Personal development and strong leadership skills are also a big focus.
Research is also a big component of the Creative Writing MFA at Full Sail. It helps to inform your writing, whether that's fiction or nonfiction, and establish your credibility. Using Full Sail's vast digital library, students learn how professionals in the industry conduct research to lend credence to their writing.
"In the creative writing industry, it's not necessarily what you know, it's who you know," says Noelani. "Networking is an essential practice because it connects you with other professionals who share your craft and passion."
To get started in networking, you'll be encouraged to focus on your personal interests so you can determine what kind of writing you want to create, what industry you want to write for, and the types of creatives you want to work with.
You should already come prepared with strong writing skills to join this program; the Creative Writing MFA will teach you about the specific processes and workflows that professional writers use in the industry. We'll prepare you for a variety of specialized fields, such as episodic and serial writing in television or streaming, writing for film, animation, games, and traditional publication.
"No matter which writing field you plan to pursue, you will learn the technical abilities and professional aptitudes that promote success in the industry," says Noelani. At Full Sail, we do this through project-based work that demonstrates what you've learned and helps you build a strong creative writing portfolio.
You'll learn to evaluate your writing for authenticity, compelling qualities, and feasibility as you write stories and scripts for a variety of formats. With feedback from faculty and peers, you'll edit and refine your writing that will go into your portfolio that can be provided to potential employers to emphasize the depth and breadth of your writing acumen.
