The New Media Journalism master's degree program at Full Sail University
The New Media Journalism master's degree program at Full Sail University is an online degree program developed for students who want to stay on the leading edge of media and communications. Program Director for New Media Journalism Ryan Kitelyn explains, "The skills you acquire will prepare you for careers in fields such as journalism, communications, and content development."
Mastery
Like other master's programs at Full Sail, the New Media Journalism degree begins with a course on Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership. This portion of the program is designed to set students up for success in a graduate-level environment before they dive deeper into their subject. That includes learning things like vital leadership skills, how to conduct research, and how to demonstrate mastery of a subject.
Advanced Journalism Skills
From there, graduate students can expect to learn how to apply traditional journalistic methods to interactive media using current technology and platforms to enhance their craft. They'll explore areas like writing for interactive media, digital news production, and multimedia reporting.
In courses like New Media and Communications, students work to understand a constantly evolving media industry and how to foster effective communication online. This program also focuses on the legal aspects of media, and students will explore how traditional media regulations apply to online platforms as well as context for future technologies and trends.
Projects & Portfolios
As New Media Journalism master's students advance through the program, they'll continue to build a journalistic portfolio of their work. It will include text, video, graphics, and other storytelling elements that show off their unique journalistic voice. This is not only a resource for the job market, but also an opportunity to dig deep into their own interests and career goals.
"You will complete a variety of projects to demonstrate your knowledge of each subject," Ryan says. "In these projects you will conduct industry research and apply what you've learned to develop online content for a variety of multimedia outlets." This also gives students a chance to create their own solutions to communications challenges in public relations and reputation management.
This program is designed to help students tackle a variety of journalistic endeavors, from editing and publishing online content to writing for TV and radio outlets. Ryan explains, "You may end up specializing in just one area, or you may find satisfaction in training your proficiencies across many different aspects of New Media Journalism."
