Three months into Full Sail University’s Sportscasting bachelor's degree program, students begin their first core class, Introduction to Sportscasting.

Concepts covered in this month-long course include the history of sportscasting, how the industry and sports shows have developed over time, the process of producing sports highlights, and the best practices for broadcast writing. In addition to learning the fundamental skills of sportscasting and TV production, students are also taught soft skills such as on-air personality and production teamwork.

Every month, the Introduction to Sportscasting course at Full Sail’s Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting begins with the same question: Who is your favorite sportscaster and why? As one of their first real lessons of the course, students are taught that it takes more than being a memorable performer and subject matter expert to succeed in the sportscasting industry. With their favorite broadcasting legend as proof, those in the class are shown that the best in the business are at their core, excellent writers and knowledgeable about every role in the studio and beyond. Although students will spend an extended period of time focusing on broadcast writing, new technology in media, production, and vocal training later on in the degree program, they’ll begin to understand how mastering all of these elements contributes to the overall success of a sportscaster.

By the end of Introduction to Sportscasting, students will have already gained experience in producing, writing, and performing a game highlight through their final course project. As they move through the program, they will continue to build on the foundation created from this course.
